Law enforcement and emergency medical responders rushed to the aid of a 3-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle Saturday evening near a campground north of Pecos, but the child died from his injuries.

The boy and his family, as well as friends and their pets, were camping in the area, New Mexico State Police spokesman Wilson Silver wrote in an email Sunday. The child was struck near the intersection of N.M. 63 and Dalton Canyon Road, Silver wrote. He did not provide the child's name.

A car traveling north on N.M. 63 around 5 p.m. Saturday stopped after seeing dogs in the roadway, according to Silver. After the dogs were removed, he wrote in the email, the driver continued without realizing the child remained in the roadway.
